this i believe.

I believe that Aggies can win a football game. I believe that Sonic commercials are the best thing to happen to television. I believe it would have been better to have spent the money on bringing clean water to the people of Africa than on the war in Iraq. I believe that tea should always be sweet. I believe no human being is ordinary. I believe “when justice is bought and sold, just like weapons of war, the ones who always pay are the poorest of the poor” . I believe that if it is called a drive-through window, you should actually drive through the window. I believe that people should take responsibility for their actions. I believe the fish sticks in the cafeteria lunch line are not real fish. I believe God is my endurance, physically and spiritually. I believe that my enemies are people just like me. I believe that trees are meant for climbing. I believe in love. I believe that flip-flops should be worn at all times, even when it is freezing cold outside. I believe people spend too much money on coffee and professional sports and not enough on the people who are suffering right outside their front door. I believe you always have time to stop and smell the roses. I believe that it is okay to take naps. I believe that “nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our lives – the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression”. I believe it is better to let the small things go. I believe that laying on a blanket and looking at the stars is one of the most enjoyable things in life. I believe that children are more capable of learning and doing than we give them credit for. I believe I am a very passionate person, whether that’s a good thing or not. I believe you should dance like no one’s watching, even if people are. I believe “peace by way of war is like purity by way of fornication – it’s like telling someone murder is wrong, and showing them by way of execution”. I believe that the most beneficial things to do in life are the hardest and the sweetest. I believe not cutting down trees is a good thing; I am quite fond of them. I believe music can make even your soul dance. I believe engineering paper is the best kind of paper. I believe if someone hits me on one cheek, I should turn the other. I believe Gumby’s pizza rolls taste better at 3am. I believe “the world is the field; the field is the world, and henceforth that country shall be my home in which I can be most used in winning souls for Christ”. I believe that throwing up is disgusting. I believe interdependence is better than independence. I believe gravity can be my friend or my enemy. I believe reading with people is better than reading alone. I believe saying, “Howdy” is the right thing to do. I believe Math is more fun than English. I believe people are born sinful. I believe that JCrew has really cute clothes. I believe smoking makes you die. I believe that twirling is magnificent, especially in a field of flowers. I believe children shouldn’t have to say the pledge of allegiance to the American flag. I believe that everyone should have the privilege of jumping off a bridge into a lake. I believe that I get distracted very easily. I believe that husbands and wives should love each other, for better or for worse. I believe tortillas and nutella were made for one another. I believe God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. I believe wisdom is found with age. I believe that television is only a fast forward button on time. I believe that it is better to take risks. I believe freedom is often mistaken with slavery. I believe “my first allegiance is not to a flag, a country, or a man, democracy, or blood – it’s to a King and a Kingdom”. I believe there is a God and that He is faithful, loving, merciful, just, sovereign, good, relational, forgiving, slow to anger, and powerful. I believe He sent his one and only Son, Jesus Christ to be born into this world of a virgin, lead a perfect life and show us how to live, die on the cross as our complete atonement, and rise three days later defeating sin and death in order to show the intricacies of his glorious grace. I believe that God sends His Spirit to those who believe in Christ Jesus to sanctify, comfort, and seal as His own. I believe that God does everything for His glory and His children’s good.

School Outside

Clouds occupy the air as students
would the halls in a perfect school,
waiting patiently to file into the classroom –
singly of course.

Not one head turned, faces beaming,
hands at their sides, bubbles in their mouths.
Yet these have an unknown destination,
traveling where no man can see,
converging just beyond our eyes’ reach.

Who taught them how to stand in such a straight line?
I know it couldn’t have been my students.
But maybe today we’ll have school outside, I think
they could learn something from these obedient clouds.
Then we’ll return inside, only to have
their creativity break free once again.

the birds and the bliss

You lead the birds where they should be;
not one falls apart from Thee.
why should my head worry bout where it rests?
why should my head worry bout where it’ll rest?
You, o God, are my sweet redeeming bliss.
in You, my God, through Christ, my freeing rest.

members only

i walked in from the car-congested street, laptop in hand,
ready to work using wireless waves that fly through the air.
realizing only after i purchased a chocolate drink
the flying waves in this building are inclusive of members only.
so i am sitting, waiting for the drink that will soon be good for my soul
listening to tunes playing at an annoyingly loud volume.
this is my confusing afternoon just beginning;
like a flower that is searching for the evening sun so it’s bud may open –
sitting there, wondering if that opaque cloud will ever move away
from the only spot in the blue sky that beckons my attention.

time useless.
if every moment is not horizontal, as humans think
but instead vertical, as the Designer sees it
why does this time seem different?
Just heal, I say.
Just heal quickly my mouth my creator and sustainer.
then I may get back, climbing up on the ladder of your time,
that I may not only see you pressing me into the kingdom once again
but also might accompany you in squeezing myself towards the end goal, you.
i love you my love
you love me, your love.
